Air1’s newest DJ is Lacy Abercrombie, but you might know her best by her alter ego, Jezziebath. The Texas native downloaded TikTok during the pandemic simply to doomscroll like everyone else, but when she went public with her hilarious Jezebel Bathsheba persona, she unexpectedly garnered a social following. “I remember thinking if this doesn’t go viral overnight, I’m deleting my account,” Lacy says, “because I’m too old to be doing this, and it’s embarrassing.” Lucky for her, her character took off immediately. Social media influencer, however, is just one of many creative hats Lacy wears. Her resume also includes student ministry, worship leading, graphic design and a stint working with I Am Second. She’s also the founder of apparel line Love Your Neighbor. As a speaker and Bible teacher, you’ll often find her sharing her remarkable testimony and her sobriety journey at churches, conferences and events across the country.
“I always say I was born into chaos,” Lacy says. “I just grew up confused by love, confused by God and confused by my mom and dad’s choices.” Her parents divorced when she was a baby and both went on to respectively remarry numerous times. By the time Lacy entered her teen years, she had encountered more trauma than most experience in a lifetime. Desperate for someone to tell her she was enough, she eventually went to live with her grandmother, who ultimately introduced her to the God of the Bible.
“My grandma loved Jesus more than, I think, anybody on the entire planet; and I believe she actually walked with Him, hand in hand,” Lacy shares. “I think she knew Him deeply, the way I now desire to know Him.”
It was also her grandmother who prayed big prayers for Lacy, even before she was born. “When your mom was pregnant with you, I laid hands on her belly, and I said, ‘This baby is going to tell thousands of people about Jesus,’” she told Lacy.
She wasn’t wrong. Beginning Sept. 29, Lacy will be telling scores of radio listeners daily about the Jesus she has come to know and love on Air1. We recently sat down with the new Tennessee resident to find out more about her personality. As you might guess, she’s quick-witted and down-to-earth, fiery and full of heart. Below, we chat all about her favorite worship artists, what you’ll find her doing in her free time and the one chain restaurant she simply cannot live without. Enjoy our conversation with Air1’s newest DJ, Lacy Abercrombie.
Air1: What was it about this role at Air1 that made you say “yes” to the job?
Lacy: What really sealed Air1 in my heart was the ministry. I went to the floor where they accept phone calls for prayer all day long, the call center. The moment the elevator dinged, I was like, “The Lord is on this floor.” I mean, the Holy Spirit hit me in the face. I just was blown away by the kindness of God to allow me to even be considered for a job like this. It’s so much bigger than playing songs on the radio. There’s life change on the other side of it. These are real-life stories of people who have been impacted by what God is doing at Air1. This is a single mom at the end of herself, feeling like she’s been unseen all day long — no one’s looked at her; no one’s locked eyes with her. And then she gets in the car, and she hears, “I’ll never be more loved than I am right now.” And she believes God sees her. That’s actually what’s really happening on the other side of the radio. And I’m like, I’ve got to be a part of that. So I think that’s kind of what sealed it in my heart. If I can be one small part of the stories, of what God is already orchestrating, I want to do it.
Air1: What do you want Air1 listeners to know about you?
Lacy: I want them to know that one of the most important things to me is authenticity. So I’m the same on air, off air, online, offline, on stage, off stage. What you see is very much what you get. And so while there is so much humor and fun — I will be that — there’s also so much depth and love for the Lord. I just really believe we’re going to know Jesus more together. So I’m excited for the listeners to go on this journey with me. I’m excited for us to partner together in what God’s doing.
I also want them to know that I really love Chili’s. It’s my favorite place in the world.
Air1: What’s your go-to order there?
Lacy: I love a Triple Dipper, with the big-mouth bites — which are the mini cheeseburgers — southwest egg rolls and honey chipotle chicken crispers. But I also love just the old-timer burger and a Diet Coke.
Air1: How has worship music personally impacted you?
Lacy: I was a worship leader for 11 years. I play the guitar. I’m not very good at it. I’ve played since I was 16, so I do play a lot of guitar alone in my house and worship that way. I listen to worship music every single day because it sets the tone of my day. Being able to connect with the Lord through music has been one of my favorite things about knowing Him, because you get to know His heart through worship music. How kind of God to allow us to experience and encounter Him and His presence through instruments and song. He’s a creative genius. He invites us to know Him better when we turn on worship music.
Air1: Who are some of your favorite worship artists?
Lacy: I listen to a lot of Abbie Gamboa — her heart is so pure. I love Aodhán King. I love their new album together, “Throwing Paint.” It’s incredible. Cory Asbury is one of my favorite worship leaders. I think there’s an authenticity and a depth to him that is just unmatched. [Former We The Kingdom member] Franni Cash — she’s just now releasing new music [as a solo artist]. She just came out with an EP, and there’s a song on there, and it’s about how God isn’t going anywhere, and it’s one of the most beautiful worship songs. I’m actually tearing up thinking about the lyrics of that song. It’s just about how God doesn’t leave us. And so Franni’s one of my favorite artists as well. I also love Brian and Jenn Johnson and “Goodness Of God.” I sang that song at my brother’s funeral.
Air1: You started a merch line in 2013 called Love Your Neighbor. What was the idea behind that venture?
Lacy: It’s not an original idea; it’s from the Bible. But it’s one of those conversation starters, because whenever you are wearing a Love Your Neighbor shirt, it’s a great way to be like, “Hey, I love your shirt.” “Oh, thanks so much. Do you want to be my neighbor? And I love you. This is actually the Gospel: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” The idea was put it on a shirt, put it on a hat, put it on a sticker, wear it. That’s pretty much it.
Air1: Your professional history is really diverse. Where did all your creativity come from?
Lacy: By the grace of God, I got to sit under some really great leadership in my first ministry job at a church. The creative pastor just taught me so much. I like to say he taught me everything I know. He kind of did. I learned how to do social media marketing; I learned how to do graphic design, video editing, content creation, copy. All the while, I also was learning how to lead worship and learning how to teach. And so, God has given me a lot of outlets and gifts, and I think it’s been such a sweet way to make a living. God has given me the gift of creativity. He’s so creative, and He’s so creative with us. My hope is that I would use the gifts He’s given me to honor Him and to give Him glory.
Air1: What do you like to do when you’re off the air?
Lacy: I’m in Bible college. I’m getting my associate [degree] in Biblical Studies. I’m a three-time college dropout, but we’re still going strong. No one in my family has ever graduated from college, so my goal is to be the first.
I like to read. I like to write. I love coffee. I have my own little espresso machine, and I make my own syrups. A blueberry latte with oat milk is my favorite. I’m learning to cook; I’m becoming better at it. I enjoy doing that; I just don’t enjoy doing the dishes afterward. I love going on walks. I go for a walk every single day, and that’s just time for me to meet with God and decompress.
